The Tirunelveli City Municipal Corporation in Tamil Nadu is expected to commission the Thoothukudi Water Supply Project by October 2016. The Rs 2.82 billion project is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Funds for the project have also beensanctioned under the state’s Integrated Urban Development Mission. The scope of work involves construction of a 84 mld water treatment plant (WTP) at Vallanadu, near the Maruthur dam, a raw water raw water pumping system and 22 overhead tanks, and laying of clear water gravity mains, clear water feeder mains, and 500 km of distribution pipelines. So far, the civic agency has completed construction work on the WTP and has set up 17 of the 22 overhead tanks. In addition, about 380 km of internal distribution lines have been laid.
