HMWSSB to draw water from existing reservoirs

With the rising demand for drinking water in the city, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to draw water from the existing water reservoirs. Sufficient water is available in the Krishna, Godavari and Manjira rivers and Singur, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs. It will meet the demands in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, outer ring road (ORR) limits as well as peripheral villages. HMWSSB is planning to provide an additional 10-20 million gallons per day (mgd) of water in addition to the 539-540 mgd that is currently being supplied. Of the 539-540 mgd, about 217 mgd is being supplied to the core city areas, 232 mgd to the peripheral areas of GHMC, 42 mgd to the ORR areas and 49 mgd is allotted to the rural water supply department.
