The Tamil Nadu government is implementing the Athikadavu-Avinashi Groundwater Recharge and Drinking WSS in the state. The scheme is being implemented at an investment of Rs 17.59 billion, and aims to fill 32 PWD tanks, 42 union tanks and 971 ponds in the Erode, Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts, and help in irrigating 24,468 acres of land. The scheme also proposes to divert around 1.5 thousand million cubic feet of water from the Bhavani river through pipelines in order to treat and refill the water bodies. Work on the scheme is almost complete and trial runs are likely to commence in four months.
