Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and Thane Smart City Limited, have installed more than 105,000 smart water meters across Thane under the Smart Water Meter project. TMC has partnered with Palladium, a global impact firm to launch this project. The meters are equipped with Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology to ensure higher accuracy. Of the 105,000 smart water meters, 70,000 are installed in slum areas while 35,000 are installed in buildings. Thane’s water distribution network distributes around 85 million litres of water everyday but is vulnerable to water leakages. This project aims to ensure that water supply is accounted for with the application of data and accurate billing. Moreover, the deployment of AMR will help TMC to carry out water audits, minimise water leakage, reduce non-revenue water percentage and monitor water consumption by a web-based application. Also, TMC will be able to shift to volumetric billing systems from the previous flat rate billing system and charge consumers fairly on the basis of actual consumption.
