The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has undertaken desiltation of 300,000 manholes under its 90-day initiative in Hyderabad. In addition to this, 3,600 kilometres (km) of sewer lines will also be cleaned to transform Hyderabad into a sewage-overflow free city. As of December 11, 2024; 122,000 manholes were desilted and 1,602 km of sewerage pipeline was cleaned across 12,673 locations. This involved the use of 220 airtech machines and 146 silt removal vehicles for sewage management.
Moreover, a dedicated dashboard has been established to monitor the initiative on a daily basis. It enables data uploading of details like cleaned pipeline lengths and manhole counts along with photographs as evidence. Also, Google maps using CAN numbers with global positioning system (GPS) integration is being deployed to record complaints relating to sewage overflow, contaminated water and road silt. GPS tracking also facilitates monitoring of silt transportation vehicles.
Additionally, installation of meters for monitoring of reservoir is under progress. This will aid in providing real-time updates on water availability and supply levels. There are also plans for surveillance of sewage treatment plants to track treatment volumes and processed water quality everyday.
