The HPCL board has approved the lube modernisation and bottoms upgradation project at the Mumbai refinery in Maharashtra. The project involves expanding the capacity for lube oil base stocks (LOBS) production from 475 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) to 764 ktpa, including the production of superior-grade Group 11+ and Group III LOBS. It also involves an increase in bitumen production by 487 ktpa and the upgradation of fuel oil to bitumen. The initiative entails an investment of Rs 46.79 billion. The schedule of the project is 36 months for mechanical completion and three months for commissioning from the date of approval.
