The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has treated 3,660 million litres per day of wastewater using Geotube technology and released it into river Ganga. This has been done in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam. Over the last month, wastewater from 23 untapped drains has been treated and purified to ensure improved river water quality for the Mahakumbh-2025 fair. The modern technology utilises geo-tubes made of pure textile fibers and threads. Reportedly, these structures have a length of 20 meters and width of 3 metres. The waste generated from the treatment process is being collected in these geotubes and is expected to be processed into a compost by April 2025.In order to facilitate the process of water treatment, temporary water treatment plants have been set up at nine sites. This helps to channel the waste into a geotube technology-based treatment plant that has been installed at Rajapur. The Geotube technology replaces the chlorination process by ozonisation followed by filtration through hydrogen peroxide. This removes the faecal bacteria and reduces the adverse impact on aquatic life. Moreover, the new technology helps in decreasing the biological oxygen demand level by around 50 per cent and the total suspended solids by about 80 per cent.
