The Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission has presented the Policy Note 2025-26 for the draft Tamil Nadu State Water Policy in the assembly on March 24, 2025. The draft has been prepared in consultation with the Water Resources Department and other relevant stakeholders. The policy aims to emphasise on promoting water governance, economic productivity and efficient use of water resources. Under the policy, a well-developed Tamil Nadu Water Resources Information and Management System is expected to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 300 million to consolidate the water-related data of the state at one platform. This will aid in the deployment of open source and open standards-based technologies.
Further, Tamil Nadu Satellite-based Water Bodies Information Monitoring and Safety System is under development. An amount of Rs 35.5 million has been sanctioned for this purpose. It seeks to undertake the conservation and restoration of water bodies using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, big data etc. and monitor the water bodies on an experimental basis in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and districts in Chennai.
