Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Delhi have developed a new approach that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with traditional hydrological models to significantly improve streamflow forecasting for India’s rivers. As per the study, the AI-enhanced model delivered markedly better accuracy in 208 out of 220 rivers analysed, compared with conventional prediction methods.
This improvement could enhance water resource planning, including irrigation scheduling, flood risk management, and reservoir operations, which rely on precise flow forecasts.
