The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is undertaking significant measures to modernise its sewage treatment infrastructure. To this end, online continuous monitoring systems (OCMS) have been installed at the 15 million litres per day (mld) Ecotech-2 sewage treatment plant (STP) and the 20 mld Ecotech-3 STP. These systems were first introduced at the 2 mld Badalpur STP, while the 137 mld Kasna STP is expected to be equipped with OCMS soon. The data collected through OCMS will be accessible to the Sewerage Department of GNIDA, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and the National Mission for Clean Ganga, enabling efficient real-time monitoring of STP’s operations. The initiative allows for continuous surveillance of key pollution indicators such as biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand, before and after the treatment.
Furthermore, the authority is set to upgrade all its STPs to enable the reuse of treated water by industries. The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has been engaged to prepare a detailed project report on the method of upgradation. The proposed initiative will introduce tertiary treatment involving a three-step purification process, aimed at meeting industrial reuse standards. As part of this effort, additional filtration units will be installed at all the STPs operated by GNIDA to ensure compliance with prescribed discharge standards. The installation of enhanced filtration systems is already underway at the Noida Sector 54 STP, so as to reduce the concentration of faecal matter in treated water from the current 230 milligrams (mg) per litre to below 100 mg per litre.
